hide and seek

she couldn’t know

i had to play strong

i smiled and played it all off

long sleeves. that was the key.

i tried to hide them.

the scars.

i couldn’t let her see.

my innocent sister

she could have never known

me

Speaks strongly about how we will go to any lengths to protect a loved one but won’t protect our own selves from harm…

Very powerful message here in this little poem.

  7. Although I don’t know what it’s like to have a sister, being an only child, I know very well what it’s like to want to protect a loved one. You would spare them from any pain, and if they’re suffering, you would suffer for them if you could.

Thank you very much for the comment on my poetry page! 🙂

That’s a fascinating read. i do like short, sharp poems where every word really counts! A powerful story told here.

I like the way you contrast such an innocent title with a deep, dark mood. It really hammers your point home! Well done

  18. You can take this poem many ways, which I feel is the beauty of poetry. Says so much with such little, very thoughtful. Good job!

    • i wrote this when i was “recovering” and was practically idolized by my little sister. The struggle to hide my scars from past mistakes was almost as hard as not making those mistakes again. i was terrified she’d find out what i had been through and that she would think less of me because of it. i wrote another poem to go hand-in-hand with this one, about hiding bruises and abuse, but i cant find it anywhere.
but this december it will be 5 years since my last relapse, so i must be doing something right 🙂
